AS/A level Physics

Course Description

The aim is to increase your knowledge of Physics and provide a scientific training useful for progressing into Higher Education or employment where knowledge of Physics would be useful. Students will also develop a deeper appreciation of how science works and appreciate how we make decisions about scientific issues which contribute to the success of the economy and society. In the first year, a course is followed which leads to an AS in Physics. You will learn about the motion of objects and the safety features of cars, Newton's Laws and parachutes. The course also covers forces and their effects on various structures, electricity, wave motion and electromagnetic waves. Much of the work is covered by practical experiments and demonstrations which are also designed to develop experimental and investigative skills. In the second year, the course covers circular motion, thermal properties of materials, momentum, electromagnetism, nuclear physics, medical imaging and the structure of the Universe along with the connections between the different aspects of physics in a way relevant to the world around us. The course also provides opportunities for students to acquire and demonstrate competence in the Key Skills. Textbooks are provided for class use and loan. The library has a good selection of books and other materials. Students are encouraged to access web-based materials such as S Cool and the Institute of Physics teaching resources. Students wishing to purchase their own books may like to consider the following which have been endorsed by OCR: OCR Physics AS (Heinemann) OCR Physics A2 (Heinemann) Health Physics by Andrew McCormick, Alexander Elliot (Cambridge University Press) These can be purchased through the College Media Store.
