AS/A Level Ethics & Philosophy (Religious Studies)

Course Description

The aims of the AS/A2 Ethics & Philosophy course are to encourage and develop the student's knowledge and enthusiasm for the study of the Philosophy of Religion and Ethics - both applied and theoretical. We engage critically with both ancient and modern thinkers on topics such as: the existence of God, whether war is justifiable and how we treat the planet. The student is encouraged to develop critical and creative thinking and written skills, as well as to increase their verbal abilities through lively philosophical debate and discussion. Raising questions is one of the most important activities in Ethics & Philosophy. However, don't expect Ethics & Philosophy classes to provide all the answers! Raising appropriate questions is a way of getting people to think more deeply about an issue, and you will probably leave a class with more questions than when you arrived. At AS Level, this course develops some of the knowledge aquired at GCSE in Religious Studies. However, no prior subject knowledge is necessary, as all topics are examined from their philosophical origins. Textbooks are provided for class use and loan. For A Level, the textbooks used are those recommended by the awarding body OCR: AS Philosophy & Ethics for OCR Student Book A2 Philosophy & Ethics for OCR Student Book In order to fully appreciate the topics studied, you should be prepared to read outside of the set texts. There are many subject specific resources in the College's Learning Resource Centre (LRC), including textbooks and journals such as 'Think' and 'Philosophy Now!' The student will also be introduced to many web-based resources and how to research topics studied. Should you wish to do any preparatory reading, then the two texts below are good introductions to the study of Ethics and Philosophy: Philosophy: The Basics, Nigel Warburton (ISBN: 978-0415327732) Philosophy: The Classics, Nigel Warburton (ISBN: 978-0415356299) Level: .
