Course Details

AS/A Level Science in Society

Course Description

Science in Society aims to discuss and debate topical and exciting developments in science. However, the scientific content is at GCSE level, so there should be no new science to learn but you will develop confidence in debating areas such as: genetic engineering, organ transplants, abortion, genetic screening, nuclear power, designer babies. The new specification has been designed to: * broaden the curriculum for those whose interests lie mainly in the arts or humanities and give those studying science the opportunity to reflect on their specialist studies in a wider context * develop the knowledge and skills that learners need to grapple with issues related to the science and technology that they meet now and in their adult and working lives * provide insight into ideas about how science works to enable application of critical thinking skills in a coherent way when reading, writing and talking about science. The course may be particularly appealing to second year students as an additional AS. A good selection of books is available from the library. There are also a number of magazines: New Scientist, The Ecologist, Biological Science Review. The College has a variety of IT resources and a new Learning Resource Centre which will allow access to computing facilities. The College's Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment (NCD Online) contains a range of Science activities and materials for you to work on independently. You can use this either in College or from home.
