A Level 3 Certificate/Diploma in Sport

Course Description

In the Sport Certificate and Diploma you will cover key elements of human anatomy and physiology and training and fitness as well as aspects of coaching, applied sports psychology and exercise, health and lifestyle. You will require a keen interest in sport and an ability to work independently to deadline as well as in groups. Assessment will be continuous and will take a variety of forms from written assignments and reports, presentations and professional discussions as well as practical performance and self evaluations. The best students will be able to use their experience to support their class and assessed work and will be confident to make contributions to class discussions. On completion of the course students will be able to apply for higher study at university and higher education colleges. When and how will I study? This one year programme commences in September and is based at the Honeywell Sports Centre. The programme consists of a combination of lectures, practical activities, oral presentations, tutorials, individual research and group work. In additional to general class work, you will be expected to use a range of textbooks for research purposes, as well as the IT facilities in the Learning Resource Centre. You will also have the opportunity to take part in coaching awards and the sport enrichment activities. What subject areas will I study? Year 1 (Certificate) • Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport • The Physiology of Fitness • Assessing Risk in Sport • Fitness Testing for Sport Exercise Year 2 (Subsidiary Diploma) • Sports Coaching • Psychology for Sports Performance • Exercise, Health & Lifestyle What equipment will I need? Barnsley Sports Academy has its own brand of sports clothing which learners are encouraged to purchase. Alternatively, learners will be expected to wear suitable sports clothing for class. If students wish to purchase the Barnsley Sports Academy clothing, this can be obtained from the Sports Centre Reception. You will need to have the usual stationary required for college as well as some sports trainers and/or boots and access to a suitable practical kit for indoor and outdoor activity. This typically consists of white t-shirts/polo shirts, dark shorts and some kind of warm jacket or outdoor jumper. How will I be assessed? Assessment will occur continually throughout the programme. You will have unit assignments to complete and will be assessed on your practical ability in some units as well as your written and presentation work. You will also have time-constrained assignments, as well as oral presentations. Each individual unit and the full award are graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction. Upon completion of the units you will be awarded a unit grade and these combine to give you a grade that can be compared to your performance at A Level. These courses carry UCAS points and can be used in conjunction with AS/A2 study to apply for university.
