A Level Computing

Course Description

In A Level Computing you will study the fundamental principles of computer systems, including data, hardware, software and communications. Examples of topics covered in the first year are the binary number system, the electronic components of a processor and the structure of the internet. Throughout your studies you will learn the practical skill of developing original software from algorithms based on different scenarios. Creating your own programs requires a logical mind and problem-solving ability. Students often find this a challenging task, but very satisfying when they finally function correctly! When and how will I study? AS – 1 year A2 – 2 years Discovery pathway – 3 years plus Good personal reference demonstrating acceptable level of attendance and commitment to hard work please note Students will not usually be able to take this subject alongside A Level ICT Students will normally take part in an interview prior to being enrolled on the programme.

Computing will prepare a student for a range of degrees including Computer Science and Software Engineering. Computing can also often provide transferable skills for a range of other subjects and careers.
