Course Description

In A Level Biology you will study basic biological principles applied to a variety of living organisms and set in different scenarios. Examples of topics covered in the first year are biochemistry, physiology, infectious diseases and genetic diversity. Throughout your studies you will also have the opportunity to develop your knowledge and understanding through weekly practical activities. Students with a keen interest in biology who wish to pursue a career in a scientific area as well as those looking to extend their knowledge beyond GCSE will not be disappointed! When and how will I study? AS – 1 year A2 – 2 years Discovery pathway – 3 years The course length is 2 years (you gain an AS Level after successfully completing Year 1, you will be awarded a full A Level after successfully completing Year 2) You will be expected to attend 4.5 hours of classes per week. In addition, you should expect to spend at least 3 hours per week studying at home to support your work at College. The majority of teaching is laboratory and classroom-based, but you are also required to use the Learning Resource Centre on a regular basis. This is for individual learning, using our excellent library and also to develop your Information and Communication Technology skills, both in producing written work using computers and in researching information from CD-Roms and the Internet.
