BA (Hons) English and Creative Writing

Course Description

The course: This well-established course emphasises the benefits of studying traditional English studies and creative writing together. We teach you to move beyond modes of simple self-expression, developing a sense of craft as you practise various forms, from poetry, fiction and life writing to travel writing and dramatic writing (stage and screen). Our course is designed to give you increased independence and choice as your interests develop over the three years. In year one, all modules are compulsory to ensure everyone’s transition to Higher Education is as smooth as possible and all students have the same grounding. In year two and three, we offer a wide range of modules to choose from, and additionally, in year three, you’ll undertake your year-long dissertation on a topic of your choice. Depending on which modules you choose, approximately half your modules will be creative and half critical. Learning Environment: Throughout the three years, we provide a friendly and supportive environment for your academic, personal, and professional development. You will have a personal tutor who will be there for you throughout your time at Plymouth and support you individually. In addition, we all have an open door policy so you can come and talk to any of us. Resources: Your English studies will be supported by excellent resources. The library is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and provides access to a vast range of books, including electronic ones, to databases, and to archives. Study abroad As an English and Creative Writing student here you'll have the chance to study abroad. The most popular destination for our students is the USA: they spend time for example at Longwood University in Virginia, the University of Mississippi, Montana State University and Idaho State University. You can choose to go for one term or for a year. We also have European exchanges, currently with Gothenburg University(Sweden), the University of Berlin-Potsdam (Germany), the University of Zurich (Switzerland), and the University of Valencia (Spain). We participate in the ERASMUS European exchange programme, and also in ISEP, the global student exchange consortium, with over 100 institutions worldwide to which our students can choose to go. So if you want directly to experience different societies and cultures, and quite literally broaden your horizons, then studying overseas could be what you're looking for.
