BA (Hons) Architecture

Course Description

When we think about Architecture, we immediately think of buildings; this is correct but studying architecture is so much more than just buildings as an object. The course is based around the whole range of issues encountered within the design process: – How we perceive, inhabit and interpret our built environment; How we value our built environment for now and future generations; How to think outside the box and to problem solve. Studying Architecture develops your skill base at many levels and invites you to engage with a whole series of issues: cultural, theoretical, practical, political, environmental, economic and social. All are ingredients of the design process. Architecture is one of the most respected subjects to study at university. Its recognised added value lies in the transferable skills set you will acquire and which is highly sought after by employers, whether in the design fields or otherwise.

Career outcomes

Fran, our Careers Adviser for Architecture, says:Students studing urban design "Most Architecture graduates use their degree as the first part of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) training requirements for certified Architects. The next step of these training requirements is to spend at least a year gaining practical experience, usually in an architect’s office. "Within the field of architecture a wide variety of work is available, from constructing new buildings to conserving old ones, and an equally wide variety of organisations hire Architects such as councils, architectural practices and construction companies. "Becoming an Architect is not the only option for Architecture graduates, as the skills and experience gained through the degree are highly valued in other occupational areas. They are especially applicable to occupations within the built environment such as Surveying, Landscape architecture and to spatial design occupations such as Interior Design and Set Design."
