Career outcomes

With strengths in both design and technology this course leads towards careers in architectural technology and many wide-ranging construction disciplines. Graduates may work in architectural technology and architectural practices, for building contractors or for energy and regulatory authorities. Architectural technology and the environment: Career options Information provided by our Careers and Employability Service. Fran, our Careers Adviser for Architectural Technology and the Environment, says: What Can I Do with My Subject? "On graduating you may wish to find immediate employment, however most ATE graduates use their degree as the first part of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) training requirements, for Chartered Architectural Technologists (MCIAT). The next step of these training requirements is to spend time in practice ( usually at least two years), with an Architectural Technology or building industry related practice, to develop experience which will build towards the Professional Occupation Performance (POP) record, which is designed to demonstrate your technical competence. The final stage for those requiring chartered status is to complete the MCIAT ‘Professional Practice Interview’, supported by a portfolio of work. Those seeking to become a professionally qualified Architectural Technician (no chartered status) will not need to undertake the Professional Practice Interview. For further information on assessment criteria and routes to qualification, please visit the CIAT website. Within the field of Architectural Technology a wide variety of work is available, from designing and constructing new buildings to conserving old ones, and an equally wide variety of organisations employ architectural technologists such as local councils, architectural practices, energy consultants, and construction companies. Becoming an Architectural Technologist is not the only option for ATE graduates, as the skills and experience gained through the degree are highly valued in other occupational areas. They are especially applicable to occupations within the built environment such as Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Sustainability and Energy Assessment and Architectural Conservation. Further Masters level qualifications might also be valuable if you wish to concentrate your career development in these areas."
