Course Description

The Master degree course “Biomimetics/Locomotion in Fluids” is a consecutive, research-oriented course of study comprising biological as well as engineering science content. Course offerings include theoretical components relating to fluid dynamics, modern experimental units drawn from aero- and hydrodynamics as well as various simulation technologies. Examples drawn from nature will be analysed in all areas, in addition to engineering science background topics. Topics include, among others: * Flow optimisation with regard to flying and swimming animals * Explanation and application of high uplift effects * Surface effects with regard to swimming organisms * Flow influence of flocking behaviour * Alternative propulsion mechanisms * Autonomous, powered submarine craft In addition to field-specific and methodological knowledge, social skills are also strengthened (acquired in interdisciplinary project teams and on excursions).
