Civil Engineering B.Sc

Course Description

The duration of the course covers seven semesters and is subdivided into four sections: - Foundation course (first and second semester) - Specialised part of the course (third and fourth semester) - Main course of study (fifth and sixth semester) - Practical semester including Bachelor Thesis (seventh semester) The goal of the undergraduate course is the acquisition of secured mathematical, natural scientific and technical foundation skills. Building on this, the specialised part of the course allows students to acquire a broad overview of all the essential specialised areas of civil engineering. In important subjects of the main course of study, skills from the specialised part are deepened. In addition, students have the possibility to form their own emphasis through the selection of ten subjects. The degree course qualifies as a training towards becoming a fully qualified engineer (equivalent to the German "Diplom Ingenieur – Fachhochschule") from a technical college. The practical semester serves to directly apply newly acquired knowledge to engineering duties. With the Bachelor thesis, students provide verification that they can solve complex theoretical problems. On successful completion of the degree course, students receive the title of a Bachelor of Science.

Career outcomes

Civil engineers plan, develop, construct, calculate and build high-quality complex projects for nearly all areas of life. Due to the superior standard of many constructions, civil engineers have a big influence on the results of planning and implementation. Working areas: Construction business Construction management - Building material industry - Construction maintenance - Facility Management - Ground construction / geotechnology - Structural engineering - Engineering offices - Settlement water economy - Environmental technology - Transport sector - Water construction Working areas: Office duties, building management, organisational duties, customer care, co-operation with architects and other engineers together overseas activities, offer a diverse working environment with excellent career opportunities. Civil engineers carry out their occupation through private employers, public authorities and also as freelancers. The Republic of Germany has approximately 80,000 construction companies and many additional engineering offices, starting from small, over medium companies, through to international groups.
