Based in our impressive Gateway building, students will have access to a range of industry standard facilities. Take a virtual tour of these impressive facilities to see for yourself. The course is taught through a variety of lectures, seminars and practical workshops. Students undertake workshops to develop skills in: camera, lighting, sound, editing and all elements of planning and pre-production, enabling them to produce a range of fiction and non-fiction films. The theoretical elements are taught in lectures and seminars with a focus towards positioning students as filmmakers. Films are analysed and deconstructed with a view to understanding techniques so they can be used and enhanced. In the third year, students also look at new media forms, such as computer game filmmaking and webcasting. The course is enhanced with a programme of professional masterclasses, guest speakers, and work experience opportunities, designed to prepare students for a career in film and television. Students take four modules each year. A typical timetable in the first year will be 16 hours of contact tuition. However, practical filmmaking assignments often require more time and students need to plan their work carefully. Students also experience filming weeks, location shooting and outside broadcasts; All have different demands and require flexible and organised thinking. The course team have a variety of experience working in both higher education and the industry. Classes are taught by specialists in each field and the content of each module helps all students on the course. We have a range of professional industry standard recording and filmmaking facilities. Based in our Gateway building, the media centre houses the latest state-of-the-art equipment in a modern and contemporary environment. Students start work on Panasonic cameras and are taught all of the manual settings. During the second and third year, they move up to working with high definition cameras, such as the Panasonic P2 and the JVC-200. Students have a choice of private and communal editing areas for teaching and project work, with Final Cut Pro/Studio, Avid and the Adobe Master Suite installed on all workstations. Each suite is capable of DVD and Blu-Ray authoring; they have a fast P2 workflow using P2CMS and come equipped with HDV tape decks for HD Digitising up to 1080/50i. Each suite is sound deadened and fully air-conditioned.
