This course is part of the Clare Business School. Every business needs competent management to ensure that it can function in today's economic environment. A significant element of business success is based on the financial decisions that are taken. This means that as well as general business skills, a good understanding of financial matters is key to organisations with the objectives of profit-making or providing value to stakeholders (shareholders, customers, patients or the general public). Business in the UK is the driver of economic success and growth. To ensure the future success of UK companies, highly skilled managers are required to provide businesses with a competitive edge in a global marketplace. In the first year the course focuses on the foundations of business and finance. Students will learn about the business environment, marketing, finance and human resources. There will be opportunities to get involved with Enterprise Week activities and charity fundraising events as part of the first year assessment. In the second year you will build on your business knowledge and start to develop a more detailed understanding of how different parts of the business are managed. You will gain the ability to construct company accounts and use computers to model financial solutions. You will develop further skills in people management and business problem solving. There will be opportunities for you to explore your own business ideas and launch your own enterprise. You can also undertake real work experience using work based learning to enhance your understanding and gain credits towards your degree. In your final year you will develop your business knowledge and management skills at a strategic level, looking at financial management and undertake a major dissertation or project. You will also have a choice of modules allowing you to pursue your areas of interest at a higher level.
