Arts and Cultural Research MRes

Course Description

The Masters degree of MRes in Arts and Cultural Research at Brighton is a new qualification designed to provide you with a foundation for a career as a researcher or research-informed practitioner, whether that is in the public sector e.g. arts administration, in industry, commercial practice, or in academic life. As preparation for a career in Higher Education, the MRes serves to bridge the gap between BA and PhD. In asking you to think about your practice as ‘research’, you are encouraged to consider how your investigations contribute to your field - a crucial consideration for PhD study. The MRes also equips you with the skills and know-how required to construct a research proposal and undertake a research project, with training in areas such as ‘research methods and methodology’, ‘the literature review’, ‘visual methodologies’ and ‘approaches to practice-based research’. A key feature of the course is the long research project, which offers you the chance to put this training into practice, around a topic of your choice, which may involve Art / Design practice. The MRes is distinct from most MA courses in its emphasis on research skills and training, and the value of these to your creative and / or academic practice and the wider workplace.
