Course Description

The BA (Hons) in Accountancy with Foundation at the Bolton Business School will give you a strong academic and vocational background in preparation for a professional career in accountancy. It will also support your career development if you are considering a broader management role, as it will provide you with the financial knowledge that is central to a significant amount of business activity. The initial foundation year of BA (Hons) Accountancy with Foundation will offer you an excellent grounding in the fundamentals of accounting and prepare you for degree level study. As you progress through the degree you will develop a sound understanding of the latest practices and theories of accountancy and cover the two key areas of management accounting and financial accounting and reporting. During your final year you will be able to select from a number of optional modules according to your personal interests. BA (Hons) Accountancy at the University of Bolton provides maximum exemption from certain professional accountancy body examinations. We offer two full-time undergraduate Accountancy degrees. The three year BA (Hons) Accountancy course (N400) is for people who will achieve the equivalent of 260 UCAS points (for instance BCC at A-level). Alternatively, our four year BA (Hons) Accountancy with Foundation programme (N410) is for students who will benefit from a period of extra preparatory study and support before making the transition to degree-level study. About the course You will be taught through lectures, seminars and tutorials and a great deal of the teaching uses case studies where academic theory is applied to real-life practical scenarios.

Careers & professional development As an accountancy graduate you can expect to develop an extensive range of technical and transferable skills. These abilities are sought by a vast array of employers across a host of business sectors. You will develop commercial awareness and learn how businesses function. You will be introduced to numerical, problem-solving and quantitative skills linked to the business context as well as gain analytical statistical skills. You will also develop the ability to present information both orally and on paper. The vocational nature of the course, together with the exemptions from certain professional body examinations, contributes significantly to preparing you for employment. Most of our accountancy graduates go on to qualify as professional accountants, either with CIMA, ACCA or ICAEW. After graduation, you may choose to enter industry and get a job as a trainee company accountant or internal auditor, or join a professional practice and train as an auditor or tax consultant. Employment opportunities also arise in banking, investment and insurance, the retail sector, government agencies such as HM Revenue and Customs and in management consultancy.
