Course Description

The role of the architectural technologist is to produce design solutions that satisfy the performance, production and procurement criteria of a building. The architectural technologist focuses primarily on the technological aspects of building design and construction, in contrast to the more artistic approach of the architect. By studying the BSc (Hons) in Architectural Technology you will gain a thorough understanding of the practice of architectural technology through your studio-based design work, using CAD, and through your final year dissertation and interdisciplinary project. You will learn the practical aspects of the role through the study of construction and environmental technology, surveying and the contract process. You will also develop relevant business skills in communications, IT and business and project management. About the course You will have access to the University’s unique design studio in Senate House which contains CAD software and hardware and other specialist facilities. The course is part of a suite of construction industry courses which provides you with the opportunity to carry out interdisciplinary work with students on associated courses. This includes a group project, which simulates what happens during a construction project from inception to completion, in which you will carry out the role of the architectural technologist within a team of other construction specialists. Your project will be assessed by a panel which includes representatives from industry and the professions. The department has excellent contacts with the construction industry and teaching staff are active members of the industry’s professional bodies. You will have the opportunity to carry out site visits and will also hear from guest speakers working in the industry. Our dedicated staff team are experts in the construction field and they have all worked at a professional level in the industry. They will provide you with a high level of support and you will always be able to find someone to help and advise you.
