Course Description

The University of Bolton’s BEng (Hons) in Automotive Performance Engineering (Motorsport) will equip you with the skills and knowledge for a career as an engineering professional. This profession is essential in many areas of the modern world, including automobile design, energy conservation, motorsport and automobile manufacture. We have created a unique and fantastic opportunity for you to work within the automotive/motorsports industry. We have teamed up with RLR Msport, and other industry professionals, so that we can offer you genuine practical experience while you study at the University. You will work alongside these industry professionals to analyse data (from pit stops, etc.), design new parts, make improvements to their racing cars, test their aerodynamics and much more. Throughout the course you will develop subject-specific knowledge and understanding with parallel business and management skills. Your studies will focus on particular areas of engineering such as analysing automotive performance, vehicle structures and systems, powertrains and aerodynamics. You will study both the theory and practice of automobile engineering. You will explore its organisation and management and, at each level, you will carry out case studies, practical and laboratory work and problem-solving projects and activities. You will also develop the presentation and managerial skills that you will use to manage engineering projects and support your future career development in the industry. About the course The BEng (Hons) Automotive Performance Engineering (Motorsport) programme has been designed and developed with the assistance of local employers. These continue to take a great interest in the progress of the programme and its students. The course will satisfy those who appreciate and are motivated by analytical challenges, using mathematical and scientific applications to solve engineering problems. It will develop your knowledge and understanding in a real world context, reflecting both current engineering practices and academic developments in the subject. We provide a progressive learning environment that will help you develop and apply a broad range of skills necessary for employability. You will develop a capacity for reasoning and analysis, interpretation of findings and application of concepts. Practical and transferable skills including communication, teamwork, organisation and time management, numeracy and competent use of information technology will all be developed. The University of Bolton has over 20 years’ experience of running degree courses in automotive engineering subjects. This degree is unique because the University works closely with an international motorsport team, RLR Msport. Based next to the Universities’ own laboratories, RLR Msport are an independent racing team who race in the Le Mans 24hr race, history Formula 1, speed series sports racing, and other international events. As well as RLR Msport being on the University site, our three dedicated laboratories have been refurbished with new performance measurements, computer aided manufacturing, and composite manufacturing equipment. We also offer engine test beds and a 1/10th scale wind tunnel. Additionally, the latest industry based software and analysis tools are available in our new CAD suite. The University is also involved with other performance car and racing organisations, which can provide employment opportunities.

Professional recognition We will be seeking to gain accreditation from the Institution of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE).
