Course Description

The BA (Hons) in Art & Design is a completely unique, modular degree that offers you the opportunity to develop a personalised study programme based on your learning needs and expectations. You will choose two disciplines from the range of art and design media available at the University, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, ceramics, video, graphic design, computers in design, textiles and surface design. Your choices will be agreed through discussion with teaching staff. You will study the core modules of your selected disciplines at level 1. At levels 2 and 3 you will have the freedom to focus on one of your options or continue your broader study of your two disciplines. You will be able to explore different techniques and modes of creativity and develop your own styles and techniques. At each level of the course you will study a critical theories module in which you will examine the theoretical and historical background to one of your chosen disciplines, considering the social, political and philosophical context of the medium and its exponents. About the course The University has excellent facilities for all aspects of art and design practice, including extensive studio space, the Innovation Factory working space and the unique Design Studio with the latest design and graphics software. There is a good staff to student ratio with excellent technical support. You will spend most of your time in an art or design studio environment where you will have the opportunity to develop your particular choice of disciplines and learn to work independently and with critical awareness. You will be encouraged to explore different art and design media and to develop links that cross the traditional art and design boundaries enabling you to learn and develop different approaches to your creative expression. For your personal project, which you will carry out in your final year, you will specialise in one of your chosen disciplines. Talks are regularly given by guest speakers who are practitioners in the different art and design disciplines. You will have the opportunity for regular visits to galleries and exhibitions as part of your studies and there are also overseas trips to key international art centres.
