Course Description

The BA (Hons) in Accountancy will give you a strong academic and vocational background for a professional career in accountancy. It will also support your career development if you are considering a broader management role, as it will provide you with the financial knowledge that is central to a great deal of business activity. The course draws on the latest practices and theories of accounting and covers the two key areas of management accounting and financial accounting and reporting, as well as offering a number of optional modules that may be selected for study in your final year. The BA (Hons) in Accountancy provides exemption from certain professional accountancy body examinations. About the course You will be taught through lectures, seminars and tutorials and a great deal of the teaching uses case studies where academic theory is applied to real-life practical scenarios.

Career outcomes

As an accountancy graduate you can expect to develop a wide range of technical skills mixed with transferrable skills that will be sought by a vast range of employers across a range of business sectors. You will learn about commercial awareness and how businesses function, numerical and quantitative skills linked to the business context, and should be able to solve problems, analyse data and statistics, and have the ability to present information both orally and on paper. The vocational nature of the course, together with the exemptions from certain professional body examinations, contributes significantly to preparing you for employment. Most of our accountancy graduates go on to qualify as professional accountants, either with CIMA, ACCA or ICAEW. After graduation, you may choose to enter industry and get a job as a trainee company accountant or internal auditor, or join a professional practice and train as an auditor or tax consultant. Employment opportunities also arise within banking, investment and insurance, retail sector, other government agencies such as HM Revenue and Customs or management consultancy. Professional recognition Exemptions are currently available from professional accountancy body examinations including ACCA and CIMA. The course offers the maximum available exemptions from ACCA in the form of exemption from papers F1 to F9. Graduates of this programme are also entitled to exemptions from AIA papers 1 to 12. They are eligible to apply to become an AIA associate member on successful completion of the final four papers of the AIA programme (provided they have the relevant work experience). Graduates of the programme can apply for associate membership of the IFA
