(Access to Higher Education Diploma) Teacher Training

Course Description

Access to HE Diplomas are designed to prepare mature learners for Higher Education (HE). They have been specifically designed for people who may have little in the way of formal educational qualifications, but who bring to the course a variety of life and work experience, a desire to learn and a willingness to study. A supportive learning environment is provided by using a variety of methods, including lectures, seminars (student-centred discussion), tutorials, group work, school placement and private study, based on a weekly timetable. The course is made up of four modules: - Core - Education and psychology - Language and literature - History and politics All units are assessed and graded. There will be a variety of assessment, including: essays, seminars, assessed readings, placement report and project work. There are also formal written examinations at the end of the course. You will be expected to undertake a placement at a primary school during the second term.

Career outcomes

In the past, students have progressed onto university courses, such as primary/secondary school teaching. You could also study a national curriculum subject at degree level (i.e. English, maths, history, etc) and complete a further year to gain a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). Evidence of voluntary or paid work in a primary school is essential to gain a place onto the PGCE course. Career opportunities exist in teaching and humanities-based career paths.
