Applied Mathematics

Course Description

The Mathematics and Science Department offers a major in Applied Mathematics. Graduates of the Applied Mathematics major will be prepared for many career opportunities in almost every sector of the job market using mathematics for analysis, prediction, modeling, and problem solving. Careers involving applied mathematics require knowledge of mathematics as well as knowledge of a field in which mathematics is used. In the Applied Mathematics program, students complete at least twelve mathematics courses and at least six approved courses in a Field of Application where significant applications of mathematics are possible. In consultation with an academic advisor, students may design an interdisciplinary Field of Application or may choose a Field of Application within a single academic discipline such as business, economics, education, environmental studies, fashion, graphic design, sociology, or sports science. Students will apply mathematics to their Field of Application in specific papers, projects, and courses. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Mathematics from the Mathematics and Science Department.

Career outcomes

Lasell Education graduates enjoy a variety of exciting career locations and settings, such as: AmeriCorps: in an immigrant community in Florida, organizing education sessions for adults and children. Teaching an integrated kindergarten class in Westford with 12 general education and 4 special education students. The integrated class format offers the children the opportunity to interact with each other throughout the school day and the teacher both supports and challenges children with a range of needs.
