Course Description

Music at the university level is for those who wish to develop their passion into an exciting and rewarding career. For students with a love for the art, this is an incredible opportunity to explore music’s many dimensions, enjoy mentorship from seasoned professionals, and build relationships with peers who may work alongside you during both during and after post-secondary studies. Whether contemplating a career in music education, performance, composition, musicology, or other music-related fields, a music degree is your pathway to an inspirational future. As a music student at Lakehead, you will have the opportunity to develop your performance skills and deepen your understanding of music theory and history. You will also enjoy courses in conducting, aural skills, composition, and orchestration, and have access to elective courses such as jazz, improvisation, performance pedagogy, Canadian music, and world music. Top quality instruction is available in all of the orchestral instruments as well as classical guitar, piano, voice, saxophone, and organ. Ensembles courses such as Chamber Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, and New Music Ensemble will complement your individual performance lessons and provide you with a well-rounded background as both soloist and collaborative musician. Our four-year Honours Bachelor of Music program is designed to prepare you for a career as a professional musician or to pursue graduate studies in fields such as musicology, composition, music theory, music librarianship, conducting and performance, among others. As such, you will have the opportunity to take a wide range of courses in music in addition to a number of non-music electives. Our four-year Honours Bachelor of Arts (Music) program offers you a somewhat more concentrated selection of courses in music and a wider selection of non-music electives. If you are interested in pursuing a career in music education, this program may be for you. Upon completion of your HBA, you may further prepare yourself for this goal by pursuing the one-year consecutive Bachelor of Education degree. Our five-year concurrent Honours Bachelor of Arts (Music)/Bachelor of Education program offers you a comparable selection of music courses to the four-year HBA (Music) program, with a wide selection of electives tailored to meet the requirements of the Bachelor of Education program. This program enables you to obtain a teaching certificate with a music option. Field placements begin at the third year level.
