Course Details

Bachelor(Bioinformatics)

Course Description

In essence, Bioinformatics is the application of information technology in the field of biology, and in particular, molecular biology. Bioinformatics is changing the way we understand the rich and diverse biological world that surrounds us. Integrating tools from many disciplines, including mathematics, computer science, biology, chemistry, and physics, this discipline is helping to expand our understanding of biological systems. Whether designing a new life-saving drug, decoding a complex genome sequence, or developing programming to analyze medical images, Bioinformaticians are leading the next stage of scientific evolution. As our understanding of the biological world grows, so will the need for scientists trained in this area to synthesize the complex data we are collecting into meaningful understandings that can help change our world. With a background in this field, you will be able to manage and analyze biological data through the creation and advancement of databases, algorithms, computational and statistical techniques, and theory. At Lakehead, you will take courses in Chemistry, Biology, Math, Physics, and Computer Science and be instructed by professors from a variety of backgrounds. As such, you will have the freedom to explore many facets of the sciences in small-sized classes with ample opportunity for 1-on-1 instruction.
