Course Description

Modern Natural Resources Management is about people, science and technology, applying many natural and social sciences to the management of the environment for the benefit of society. You will acquire a distinct combination of business skills, a sound science foundation, and practical experience that is needed to create meaningful and lasting solutions for today's unique environmental challenges. Learn the solutions that will sustain our forests and natural resources for generations to come. With the opportunity to focus your study within a specialization, you will delve deeper into the areas of Forest Management, Forest Health and Protection, or the emerging frontier of Wood Science. As our understanding of the natural environment expands, you will be prepared to tackle the modern issues natural resource managers face. You will also be engaged in the high-tech world of modern management through advanced GPS/GIS systems, 3-D visualization satellite imagery, genetic research and much more. Lakehead University's HBScF programs are nationally accredited by the Canadian Forestry Accreditation Board (CFAB), providing graduates with the academic credentials to become a Registered Professional Forester anywhere in Canada. Whether you are interested in the Honours Bachelor of Science in Forestry or the Honours Bachelor of Environmental Management, you will take part in a common curriculum for the first two years of your program. Instilling a broad introduction to the topics and issues surrounding natural resources management will allow you to better develop and understand your interests when you, after second year, select one of six specializations to complete your program.

Career outcomes

Each year, numerous employers come on campus to recruit our students because we have a reputation for putting students with much valued, hands-on experience into the work force. Graduates no longer limit themselves to the “traditional” careers found principally with large companies or government agencies. Lakehead graduates are “planners,” and “facilitators.” The majority remain in touch with the natural environment – as employees of large or small organizations, or as entrepreneurs or consultants. We have graduates in every province from coast-to-coast, and beyond!
