Course Description

As a student, you will obtain a sound understanding of natural processes in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, including a strong background in forest science, communication skills in writing and speaking, and practical technical experience. With the opportunity to focus your study within a specialization, you will delve deeper into the areas of Wildlife Conservation and Management, Conservation Planning and Management, or maximize your elective opportunities through a Directed Learning Option. As a graduate from the program, you will seek to understand and maintain the natural integrity of the fundamental processes that drive the world's ecosystems. This program gives you the flexibility to build expertise in an area of interest such as wildlife habitat management, water/forest interactions, carbon management, climate change mitigation, natural resources policy, geographical information systems or First Nations forestry. In a feature unique to Lakehead University, students of the HBEM program who complete the specialization in Wildlife Conservation and Management are eligible for accreditation as a Certified Wildlife Biologist (accredited by the Wildlife Society of America). Whether you are interested in the Honours Bachelor of Science in Forestry or the Honours Bachelor of Environmental Management, you will follow a common curriculum for the first two years of your program. Career outcomes

Each year, numerous employers come on campus to recruit our students because we have a reputation for putting students with much valued, hands-on experience into the work force. Graduates no longer limit themselves to the “traditional” careers found principally with large companies or government agencies. Lakehead graduates are "planners," and "facilitators." The majority remain in touch with the natural environment – as employees of large or small organizations, or as entrepreneurs or consultants. We have graduates in every province from coast-to-coast, and beyond!
