Bachelor of Architectural Studies (Interior Architecture)

Course Description

If you enjoy design and the practicalities of working with space, materials and colour then our degree will give you the creative and technical skills essential for starting a successful interior design career. Our Bachelor of Architectural Studies, with specialisation in Interior Architecture, is a full time three year programme. You will learn the critical and creative thinking skills that you'll need to resolve original concepts and ideas in interior architecture design. The foundation year of this programme includes studies in drawing, computer aided design, building construction and science as they apply to architecture. In the final year you can specialise in Interior Architecture or Architectural Technology. You will focus on design subjects including architectural draughting, CAD, construction and technology, interior/spatial design, commercial and domestic interior architecture, exhibition and display environments, furniture design, restoration and conservation of interiors, and stage, television and film sets. You'll spend about 40 hours a week in practical workshops, lectures and undertaking your own independent research and practice. It's pretty much a 9-5 timetable. In your first year of study you can expect to spend about 20-25 hours per week in class and 15-20 hours in independent study.

Career outcomes

As a graduate you'll be moving into an expanding industrial marketplace. More and more older, existing buildings are being refitted for new purposes. This work requires designers who can think and create from the inside out. You may have the chance to work for an architectural design partnership, an interior design company, a retail design firm, a large building company, or a local government body.
