Course Description

If you enjoy the practical side of science, our degree gives you knowledge and skills across a wide range of disciplines within biology and chemistry. Our Bachelor of Applied Science (Laboratory Technology) is designed in conjunction with industry. It provides a combination of core practical and workplace skills is ideal for people who want to use practical science in the workplace. You will study chemistry and microbiology to advanced levels, along with the study of the technologies of molecular biology and biotechnology. Key concepts of quality assurance, legislation affecting laboratories, relevant to New Zealand and International standards. Workplace communication and ethics are also covered. In the final year you will complete a relevant research project and science laboratory work placement. The Certificate in Pre Health and Science provides a pathway into the programme if you do not meet the entry criteria. Career outcomes

Most of our graduates initially gain employment as laboratory technicians in the food industry, medical and veterinary diagnostics, horticulture, agriculture and environmental fields. Once you have developed your experience you may move into consulting and management roles or pursuing niche areas like forensic analysis. Some graduates use the degree as a basis for secondary teaching or technical writing (after postgraduate training), and science related marketing opportunities.
