Accounting

Course Description

The undergraduate accounting program focuses on preparing individuals to enter the profession of accounting. The course of study seeks to provide the technical and business skills necessary to start a career field, while also cultivating the competencies required for success in graduate level education. The program is designed to first meet the goals stated in the Mission Statement of the School of Business. This is supplemented with a course of study specific to accounting. In addition to a solid core of liberal arts and general business courses, the program requires students to become proficient in financial reporting, auditing, and taxation. Accounting differs from other fields in business in that the practitioner must understand and implement a specific body of generally accepted principles. Knowledge of these rules is necessary to become a Certified Public Accountant. For this reason, the program will use the standards in place at the time a student participates in the program to help her or him attain the core competencies necessary for success in the profession.
