Advanced Safeguarding (MSc)

Course Description

We are proud that our course: • Has been designed in consultation with key health and social care employers to meet the needs of the modern practitioner. • Involves service users and carers who are instrumental to the delivery of the course, as they are involved in the teaching and part of the management committee. • Invites practicing managers and specialists within safeguarding practice to deliver teaching which looks at innovative ways of assessment and intervention. • Incorporates the research carried out within the Centre for Applied Childhood Studies and the Centre for Health and Social Care Research, which is of the highest standard and nationally and internationally recognised. This course is designed to enable health and social work professionals and others in the safeguarding fields to analyse and evaluate the current state of knowledge, UK policy and practice in this area. The course aims to link theory, research and policy. You will consider the nature of child welfare and safeguarding, multidisciplinary approaches and integrated theoretical and practice frameworks. We emphasise anti-oppressive and anti-discriminatory practice and empowerment. We also take into consideration agency mandates and your individual learning and practice needs and interests. Within this course there are three distinct areas you can specialise in: • Adults safeguarding • Children’s safeguarding • Mental Health safeguarding.

Career outcomes

This course makes a significant contribution to specialist skills and post registration development (SSPRD) in safeguarding and can enhance your career progression. The structure of this Master’s course is in line with the new Professional Capabilities Framework for social work, developed by the Social Work Reform Board and owned by the College of Social Work and completion of this Master’s course would be evidence of performing at an advanced level. Health organisations also link career grades to academic achievements in the area of safeguarding. This course has enabled our graduates to achieve specialised positions within safeguarding.
