Animation BA(Hons)

Course Description

Our animation studio culture emphasises concept-driven innovation in both aesthetic and technical terms. In addition to creating animated short films, you'll explore and create 2D, 3D and 4D digital content for a range of platforms, environments and devices. Using professional industry standard software and hardware, as well as for installations and bespoke devices. You'll develop content for single and multiple screen formats, and for diverse commercial and avant-garde contexts. You'll also study computer generated imagery (CGI), contemporary film and animation genres, experimental narratives, produce animation showreels, script expressions for visual effects and interactive processes. Although we emphasise contemporary computer-based animation you will also work in contemporary hand animation techniques and work with drawings, models and sets to make stop-motion and graphical animation.

Awards and Northern Design Competition Awards.Students have also been runners up and shortlisted in major competitions including Creative Review / BFI competition, Disney’s Brains for Games Competition, the Little Big Chip Awards, and Adobe Creative Awards. Student work has been featured in international magazines including Computer Arts and Creative Review and is occasionally published, for example Data Flow: Visualising Information in Graphic Design. Our graduates have taken up worldwide employment opportunities in animation, new media design, film, special effects and games companies, delivering inspiring 2D and 3D animations, visual effects and concept art. Director, producer, art director, storyboard artist, 3D animator/artist, modeller, VFX producer, motion designer, motion graphics programmer, digital designer, interaction designer, interface developer, effects/technical director, editor, production co-ordinator, runner and producer are some of the roles available to successful graduates.
