Course Description

* Promote the concept of lifelong learning * Empower the learner to use the knowledge and skills gained in theory and apply to practice * Act with professionalism and integrity * Improve and deliver high quality care * Work collaboratively across professional boundaries * Safeguard the public * Enhance the health and wellbeing of the population * BN (Hons) Nursing leading to registration on the NMC Register * Full time route 3 years The programme consists of a full time three year pathway equating to 4,600 hours. It comprises three distinct parts, on each of which the student must achieve periodic progression criteria (NMC 2010) set out to allow for succession to the next year. The programme has both field and generic learning which is directed towards a specific area of nursing practice such as adult nursing, children’s nursing, mental health nursing or learning disability nursing, and enables the student to be able to care for a range of clients. * Adult Nursing * Child Nursing * Learning Disability Nursing - (Information Evenings) * Mental Health Nursing The programme is fully modular, based on a 20 credit structure. The focus of this innovative programme is nursing theory (with a strong focus on simulation activities within clinical skills laboratories) and practice, the balance being 50% theory and 50% practice in all years. Practice in all years is fully supported by a dedicated practitioner. During the practice learning experiences, students will work over a seven-day period and will be expected to work a variety of shifts over a 24-hour period. This will include rotation to night shift (within agreed limits). The profile for practice learning experience's for each student will be guided by the requirements for a balanced experience, which mirrors the work of qualified nurses. The diverse practice learning experiences will enhance student development, knowledge and understanding of healthcare. Theoretical perspectives are used to explore the following * The first suite of modules allows students to develop into autonomous practitioners through practice learning opportunities, practice simulation, portfolio development and reflection. * The second suite of modules continues the practice learning journey and focuses on skills addressing two domains, nursing practice and decision making, and communication and interpersonal skills * The third module suite relates to professional values, and leadership, management and team working. It is here that aspects such as compassion, safeguarding and dignity are promoted, along with inter-professional learning in which nursing students from all fields and social work, midwifery and dietetics students work together in an e-learning module. * The fourth suite relates specifically to nursing practice and decision making and predominantly focuses on the understanding, knowledge and management of clients needing interventions in generic and field-specific nursing. * Finally, the fifth suite develops the students’ understanding of public health, health, wellbeing, prevention and promotion, critical perspectives in health and social care and encapsulate all learning in the programme.

The programme also encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning, and to become more independent and autonomous learners with an increasing use of self-directed study time as the individual progresses throughout the programme. This is aided with the use of group work, seminars and tutorials within in every module. The practice assessment and use of simulation is a theme carried throughout the programme, which accenuates the development practical learning and communication skills which are core to nursing. The programme employs a variety of innovative and creative assessement methods, which include group presentations, production of health promotion materials, multiple choice questionnaires and unseen written examinations, which address both the theoretical content and practical component of the programme. Service users are also part of the assessment and learning process.
