BA (Honours) Combined International Relations

Course Description

International Relations at Chester focuses on the forces that structure and shape global politics. Students are introduced to key theories, policies and practice in the area. Importantly, the process is constantly contextualised by looking at real-world examples of power, economics and social relations. We encourage our students to ask and explore questions that are relevant to today’s complex world. For example: * "What are the underlying causes of conflict and change?" * "Is it possible to alleviate global inequalities in wealth and power?" * "What are the aims of foreign policy and how effective is diplomacy?" * "Who or what causes global insecurity?" As part of the programme students undertake modules that examine diverse topics such as security studies, international political economy and the history of the social, economic and political advancement of international systems. Via our dedicated teaching team we seek to give students an in-depth understanding and an ability to interrogate and challenge popular beliefs and news headlines. ‘Internationalise’ your combined degree: by combining with International Relations, you can immediately add an international and employability dimension to your degree. International Relations combines particularly well with Politics, Sociology and Economics, which are all housed in the same Department, but there are a number of other natural combinations (see the list of links below for combinations). In addition, we focus on developing transferable real-world skills, such as critical and analytical thinking, refined researching capabilities, through to the confident presentation of findings. We also encourage students to undertake relevant volunteering and work placements. Our staff are accomplished researchers, teachers and writers who understand that students learn in a variety of ways. Our approach blends into our wider Departmental philosophy of enriching and enhancing the student experience. As a team of dedicated researchers and educational practitioners we are committed to the following: * Helping students to become confident independent learners * Creating the best university experience by offering personalised support * Encouraging a vibrant and engaged student community * Challenging students through innovative and inclusive assessments * Working in close concert with library and online services * Clearly stating expectations of staff through a Partnership Agreement International Relations at Chester blends theory, policy and practice in an accessible yet rigorous way. Indeed, issues surrounding globalisation, environmental change and the complexities of interdependence are a priority for us here in this course. Students will find the content of International Relations stimulating and, given the supportive learning environment here at Chester, highly rewarding too.
