This degree combines the study all aspects of the medieval world, its literature, history and belief systems, with an exploration of the Chinese language (Mandarin and Classical Chinese) supported by modules exploring Chinese culture in its various manifestations across the entire span of China's pre-modern and modern history. It places particular emphasis on the study of documents and manuscripts. The course does not require prior experience in China or of the Chinese language.
