BA Archaeology with Education Studies

Course Description

Archaeology is the study of the human past through an examination of physical remains such as stone tools, pottery and bones, through to buildings, structures, monuments and landscapes. It attempts to reveal how contemporary societies, other past societies, and our own society are organised and how we interact with our environments and landscapes. You will engage with theoretical and ethical issues such as heritage and tourism, cultural politics and environmental change, as well as participate in an annual excavation at the spectacular Cistercian monastery and hinterland of Strata Florida, a few miles north of the campus in the Cambrian mountains. The programme offers students a wide range of topics and interests, from Ancient Egypt to issues of conservation, representation and display, from Palaeoenvironmental archaeology to Death and Burial. The Education part of the Degree introduces students to various aspects of education policy, history and practice, and comprises of two modules of study per year over all three years of your degree. The modules have been specifically designed to align closely with the Humanities subjects and are delivered by the Faculty of Education and Training. Typical modules within the education spine include: Historical & Contemporary Issues in Education, Learning, Knowledge and Education and Culture, Identity and Education. In addition students during their second year of study will undertake a 20 credit teaching observation in a local school.
