BA Anthropology with Education Studies

Course Description

Anthropology is the study of human societies and cultures in all their richness and diversity. Anthropologists are interested in anything and everything that humans do, whenever and wherever they do it. From body modification practices amongst remote tribal groups in Africa, to the use of online social networking sites such as Facebook in contemporary Western societies, our Anthropology degree offers extensive insight into the wonderful multiplicity of the human condition because of the wide ranging themes and areas we cover in the programme, but what makes our programme unique is the approach we take to teaching anthropology. We recognise that practical, first-hand engagement with ‘other’ cultures is the best way to understand the anthropological endeavour, and if you choose to study with us you will be given plenty of opportunity to experience what it means to be an anthropologist - how to acquire and apply anthropological theory by using it in the ‘real’ world. Indeed, we are one of the few places where undergraduate students are provided with in the field practical training in anthropological research methodologies in addition to the theory which is integral to any academic qualification in anthropology. The Education part of the Degree introduces students to various aspects of education policy, history and practice, and comprises of two modules of study per year over all three years of your degree. The modules have been specifically designed to align closely with the Humanities subjects and are delivered by the Faculty of Education and Training. Typical modules within the education spine include: Historical & Contemporary Issues in Education, Learning, Knowledge and Education and Culture, Identity and Education. In addition students during their second year of study will undertake a 20 credit teaching observation in a local school.
