Applied Science BTEC Level 3

Course Description

You will study 6 units plus a number of optional units for a period of 10 hours per week over 2 years. Compulsory units include Fundamentals of Science, Working in Science, Scientific Investigations, Practical Techniques, Perceptions of Science and Using Mathematical Tools in Science. Examples of optional units include Physiology of Human Body Systems, Medical physics techniques, Biochemistry and Biochemical Techniques, Energy Changes, Sources and Applications, Genetics and Genetic Engineering, Science for Environmental Technicians, Forensic science, Chemical Periodicity and its Applications. The units actually offered will depend upon demand each year and it will be reviewed annually.

Career outcomes

EThe BTEC level 3 Diploma gives you the opportunity to enter employment in the science sector or to progress to vocational qualifications such as the BTEC Higher National Diploma in Applied Science or a degree in Applied Sciences. Applied Science could lead to a career in the chemical industry, health care, leisure and associated industries, medical and laboratory based science or food and catering industries. You could find yourself working as a quality control technician/analyst, in ICT and data interpretation, in a hospital as a medical physics technician supporting the use of X-ray and other imaging/scanning equipment, in a research laboratory in the development of new drugs, in the chemical industry, involved with testing materials, in the forensic science service or using their analytical skills in the chemistry industry, in chemical companies developing fertilisers and other plant feeds, working for a scientific magazine or journal.
