Course Details

Art and Design

Course Description

The course, which is fine art focused, consists largely of practical work and is entirely coursework moderated, with no main exam in the first year. Specialisation occurs in the second year, with a written component linked to the practical work. Therefore Gallery visits and a period of Critical Studies forms part of the teaching programme. Each year comprises two units of study. There are four assessment objectives, and with Unit 1, in addition to a visual project, a portfolio of work is submitted for moderation. All Units contain breadth but retain sufficient depth of study, with an emphasis on process and experimentation in the first year, and more completed outcomes in the second. Students will be able to work in a variety of areas: drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, 3D, photography, and critical studies. Life drawing classes take place in college, there is usually an artist in residence and gallery visits are a regular part of the course. Homework, through the use of sketchbooks, is set on a regular basis, and students must be prepared to put in extra study time in if they are to be successful, as assessment is by coursework based examination.
