Bachelor of Arts in Economics

Course Description

Economics examines how humans utilize limited resources, which means economists deal with all kinds of real-world problems: the budget deficit, the war on terrorism, the environment, unemployment, education -- all of these are economic issues. Marietta's program teaches you to look at the big picture and see how it impacts business. At the same time, we stress the theoretical side of economics and the mathematical and statistical techniques you'll need. The senior capstone in economics enhances your ability to utilize the regression analysis in order to conduct an empirical test of the validity of the economic theories and share your findings with others in an oral presentation session. It's precisely this ability to apply abstract principles to practical matters that makes economists so highly valued -- according to one source, economics graduates rank in the top four of the highest salaried professionals. Each year, our Milton Friedman Lecture brings a nationally renowned economist to campus. Past lecturers include Dr. David Friedman, professor of law and economics at the University of Chicago; Dr. Andrew Brimmer, president of Brimmer & Co; and Dr. Alfred Broadhus, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. At lunch meetings of the Economic Roundtable of the Ohio Valley, you'll meet and hear influential speakers like: R. Glenn Hubbard, Chairman, Council of Economic Advisors to the President of the United States Dr. James Tobin of Yale University and Dr. Lawrence Klein of the University of Pennsylvania (both Nobel laureates in economics) Douglas Fraser, president emeritus of the United Auto Workers David Brandon, Chairman and CEO, Domino's Pizza International Visiting speakers will often meet with classes to discuss current economics topics. Marietta faculty members and students, together with the Economic Roundtable of the Ohio Valley, produce MACRO & micro, an economic newsletter.
