Bachelor of Arts in: Early Childhood Education

Course Description

At Marietta College we seek to prepare candidates who will be educator leaders in their schools. You will be provided with many opportunities for first-hand experiences working with students in your chosen teaching area. Starting your very first semester, our field experience program will introduce you to the real world of teaching. During the rest of your time here, field experiences are your chance to practice the knowledge and skills you're learning on campus. Along the way, you'll work with professors who have taught in a variety of schools and who are here to guide you through each step of your particular professional development plan. During their final semester, teacher education students complete twelve weeks of supervised full time student teaching in a local k-12 classroom. This clinical experience is documented in the Marietta College Capstone Portfolio, which is reviewed at the end of the student teaching semester. The Capstone Portfolio is an electronic document that allows students to select and present artifacts and reflections from coursework and clinical experiences that demonstrate their professional knowledge and skills. Artifacts include written work, photographs, video clips, technology projects, and feedback from supervisors. Students present their finished portfolios to education department faculty during a capstone portfolio presentation day at the end of the student teaching semester. Marietta College has consistently ranked in the top quartile of Ohio colleges preparing teachers. Graduates are highly successful in passing Praxis II and Praxis III assessments for licensure.

Career outcomes

All education majors participate in a field experience to introduce them to the program, beginning with their freshman year. During each year that follows, students will venture out into their teaching area to practice theories and methods they have learned in the classroom. The field experience culminates in a student teaching position during the senior year. Because we stress the role of technology in teaching, you'll learn to utilize the newest instructional technologies, making you prepared to meet the growing demand for teachers who know how to integrate technology into instruc-tion. You will learn to create web pages and other instructional applications to use with students in your classroom. During your senior year, you will complete your electronic portfolio to showcase your knowledge and skills as a begin-ning teacher.
