Bachelor of Art in Environmental Studies

Course Description

Solving today's environmental problems requires innovative approaches. At Marietta we've developed environmental science programs that draw on the expertise of our faculty in the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities to examine these issues from every angle. So whether you want to study the scientific principles behind environmental problems or the social influences that create and solve those problems, you'll find a program that fits your interests and lets you explore career possibilities. You can choose from two different majors: The Environmental Science major is a collaborative effort by the entire science division, which gives you access to all of the resources and faculty that Marietta's science programs have to offer. The program also gives you the opportunity to pursue one of four tracks within the major: Waste Management, Biological Resource Management, Energy and Mineral Management, or Water Resource Management. The Environmental Studies major lets you focus directly on the social issues surrounding environmental concerns. With this major, you're prepared for a career in government, law, non-profit management, and journalism. Students from both majors participate in a unique, team-based capstone experience where they apply their collective experience to an environmental problem of local significance. Projects are supervised by faculty from across the entire science division, often with input from a broader range of faculty advisors. Often the environmental scientists on the team analyze and study the problem, while the environmental studies majors interact with the local community to frame the issue and possible solutions. They are trained in the art and science of collaboration so that local stakeholders and community leaders can take ownership of the solutions proposed to address the problem.
