97% of our Law students are in employment or further study six months after graduation (Graduate Destination Survey, 2010). In Wales, there is a demand for professional individuals who can communicate effectively in Welsh and English, especially in the public sector. Having two languages can enhance your career prospects, which will be a great advantage when you look for graduate positions. We are committed to delivering the highest quality legal education. We’ve designed our courses in consultation with local solicitors to meet the demands of today’s legal profession and to give you the intellectual training and practical skills to succeed in today’s competitive employment market. Our links with businesses in Wales, the UK and overseas mean that our teaching is informed by actual practice, and our modules are regularly updated to reflect real-life trends. In addition to specific knowledge of the law and its applications in the real world, you will gain a vast range of transferable skills such as the ability to communicate effectively, retrieve and handle information competently, analyse and solve problems, and have the confidence to present logical, reasoned arguments. Such emphasis on the acquisition of skills means that our graduates are well-equipped for the challenges of the workplace. To improve your career prospects, we encourage personal development and invite high-profile speakers. Our careers provision includes workshops that aim to improve your skills in CV writing, creative job-hunting, completing effective application forms and the opportunity to meet prospective employers. The University’s Careers Service can also discuss in detail your CVs, training contract applications, work experience, career networking opportunities or alternative career options. There is a dedicated law adviser who is available to give one-to-one guidance to all law students and you will have access to a ‘mock interview’ service as preparation for any career-related interview. Recognising the need for our graduates to be able to stand out in a competitive jobs market, the University of South Wales has developed a series of employability initiatives that exist within each academic Faculty. Work/study placements You may have the opportunity to undertake work-based learning via a one-week work placement. We have extensive links with some 40 firms and legal departments of local authorities. Students participating in the placement scheme acquire valuable professional skills and business contacts which can often lead to full-time employment. As part of your degree, you may be able to study abroad for up to a year – either in Europe, at our partner universities in the USA or Canada, or further afield. Studying abroad is a great boost to your CV – you’ll get an international perspective on your subject, become more independent and confident, make new friends, and you might even pick up a few new language skills. What’s more, it’s not a ‘gap year’, so the time you spend overseas can count towards your degree. Whether it’s studying abroad or gaining work experience, our experienced team will help you find a placement in an area that interests you. Career options The ability to work on a professional level and deliver a high standard of service in Welsh and English will be an advantage when working in Wales in the future, especially within the public and voluntary sectors. There are many opportunities for people who have a thorough understanding of the law, together with good written and oral communication skills in the Welsh language. If you wish to become a solicitor, you can complete the Legal Practice Course at the University. As a LLB graduate you will be given preferential consideration for a place on our Legal Practice Course for entry to the solicitors’ profession. For those who choose to follow non-legal careers, the LLB (Hons) Law with Professional Welsh is an excellent preparation for a range of careers in government, the financial and managerial sectors and education.
