This police sciences degree is designed to develop your personal skills, as well as impart academic knowledge and practical applications of criminal law, scenes of crime, criminology, police management, operational planning and the latest aspects of criminal investigation. Operational policing is the “why and how” of police practice and management. You will gain management skills that are required at all levels, from planning minor and major operations through to budgeting. You also will be introduced to legislation to prepare you for your progression to the police service. Crime science and criminology examine many areas surrounding policing, including the causes and prevention of crime, policing styles and community involvement. The preservation of the crime scene is a vital skill for police officers, so you will gain key forensic science skills in our new laboratories and practical sessions. Personal development will give you key skills for file preparation, conflict management and interview, plus some knowledge of first aid.

These links have been designed to provide you with the best possible employment prospects. Certificate in Knowledge of Policing This certificate is an essential entry requirement for employment in most police services including The Metropolitan Police, South Wales Police and Gwent Police and we are the only University that is approved by the College of Policing and Skills for Justice as a provider of this certificate in Wales. This certificate is integrated into the final year of your course and upon passing the associated assessment you will gain your certificate. This is included in your course at no extra cost. For students who want to gain employment within the South Wales Police and Gwent Police you will have the additional benefit of knowing that by obtaining your certificate from the University of South Wales you will meet the additional entry requirements set by these police services. Advanced Specials Programme This is an innovative programme between South Wales Police and the University of South Wales which provides you with unique support, advice and guidance in becoming a special constable and developing the occupational competencies needed by a police constable. In your first year of study, South Wales Police Officers will come to the university to recruit our students. This shows that our students are in demand and desirable. If successful, you will maintain this role throughout your studies gaining valuable work experience. Over the remaining two year period you will be supported by a police officer to become a fully operational officer. After graduating and satisfying the national recruitment process you will be able to join South Wales Police as a fully operational police constable. Preferred Candidate Status We are able to provide you with training in your third year by South Wales and Gwent Police Officers. This training combined with the certificate means that when you graduate you will be in a position to enter employment with South Wales or Gwent Police and start working on patrol after only one week without the need for further training.
