Business, Economics & Advertising BA (Hons)

Course Description

This course provides a general business perspective alongside the potential to develop a specialist understanding of Economics and Advertising enabling you to develop a real insight into the dynamics of the business world. This degree will prepare you well for a wide range of careers in the economics sector (such as the civil service or a think tank), in advertising (particularly for global organisations or the government) and in the broader business sector (including market research or consultancy). The study of Economics will develop your ability to analyse economic challenges so that you can make effective business decisions which reflect the constraints of the existing economic environment. You will explore underlying economic issues, their causes, how they can be changed, and what these issues mean for countries, businesses and individuals. Economics offers a real insight into what makes the world function and economists are highly respected and sought after by governments, industry, commerce and education. We focus on the practical management of Advertising from both the client and agency perspectives. This means that you do not need a design or creative background. You will explore psychological, operational and strategic aspects of advertising, branding, campaign planning and the latest advertising and media developments. You will be encouraged to discover your own areas of greatest potential via an applied (real world) learning experience with hands-on practical assignments. You will develop a genuine passion for advertising and the skills to help you ‘make it’ in a competitive industry. Our BA (Hons) Business, Economics & Advertising degree will provide you with a credible employability profile signalling a candidate with a genuine interest in understanding the world of business who has the ability to think creatively and analytically, and who understands how to positively influence others. You will also learn to make logical decisions; to interpret and use management information; to manage time, projects and resources; to work effectively as a member of a team with the ability to lead and inspire others; to be self-reliant; to use initiative and to champion an ethical and socially responsible approach to business. This degree is taught by economists who have actively advised businesses and governments and helped implement economic development policies in the UK, Europe and the Far East; and by advertising practitioners with multinational experience, (eg PepsiCo, 7Up, Tropicana, Procter & Gamble, Shell, Tetrapak). During your course you will also have the opportunity to take a paid placement year in industry and study overseas at one of our partner universities in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or Europe.
