Course Description

We live in an Americanised world. This fascinating course enables you to study the world’s only superpower and spend a full year abroad at one of 40-plus US university campuses – the widest choice available to UK students. Most universities offer just one semester in the US but our students go for a year to fully immerse themselves in American culture. Hull has been pioneering the teaching of American Studies in the UK for more than 50 years, and our diverse range of modules allow you to tailor the degree to suit your own interests and career aspirations. Our friendly, approachable academics are international experts in the field of American Studies. You can specialise in history, literature or culture, if you choose, but are encouraged to embrace the rich diversity of American studies. Our graduates are in high demand from employers who value their skills, confidence and flexibility. If you don't have the qualifications to enter the degree directly, we offer a foundation year to prepare you for degree-level study.

Career outcomes

Graduates with skill, imagination and confidence are in demand, and our students now enter an increasing range of careers. Many alumni enter management training programmes in fields such as broadcasting, the arts, finance, personnel work and retail, while a number go on to traditional employment associated with arts graduates – such as in teaching, law and the Civil Service. Some of our alumni can be found in senior positions in the American Embassy and in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office; another is the President of the Foundation for International Education. Others have had success in areas such as journalism, television and radio broadcasting or writing. To boost employability, our courses allow you to approach your studies with a focus on history, literature and culture, encouraging you to develop flexible skills in organising and analysing material and in presenting a well-written and well-argued case. A year in the United States also boosts confidence and further broadens your horizons – and always attracts the interest of employers when it comes to job interviews.
