BA (Hons) Chinese Studies

Course Description

China’s economy is the second largest in the world, with the potential to soon become the largest. Its regional and global influence cannot be overlooked. Mandarin Chinese is the most widely spoken language on Earth, and this degree will develop your language skills and cultural insights to access and engage with one of the world’s oldest and richest cultures. Your study will be further contextualised through experience, spending your third year at one of our partner universities in China. Hull offers excellent facilities in the Language Learning Centre. Our team of Language Learning Advisors offer extra one-to-one support to help you with your studies, as well as a partnership scheme which allows you to practise Chinese with native speakers. While studying for your degree, you have the opportunity to gain a recognised teaching qualification in Trinity CertTESOL (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). If you don’t have the qualifications to enter the programme directly, we offer a foundation year to prepare you for degree-level study.

Career outcomes

Our objective is to make you fluent in written and spoken Mandarin Chinese and to give you a sound knowledge of Chinese life and culture, while also fostering the critical and analytical skills and the confidence and maturity which will make you attractive to employers. Modern languages are vital in a world of international cooperation, interdependence and trade. Mandarin Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world and, since it is not taught in many UK schools, you will find yourself in demand when you graduate. Following graduation, our students are well equipped for a range of careers including translation and interpreting, journalism and teaching. Many have also gone onto successful roles within business, broadcasting, law, politics, charities, public relations, and education, as well as the Civil Service. As a Hull Alumni you continue to have access to the University Careers Service, which provides a wealth of advice, information and guidance to help ready you for the world of work. You can also choose the pathway to further study and training; our graduates have gone on to study Masters courses, while others have taken a teaching route and progressed to a Postgraduate Certificate in Education.
