BSc (Hons) Agriculture (Livestock)

Course Description

In addition to the core agricultural modules (see table), this course offers specialist modules in livestock science and husbandry and advanced livestock production and an associated 20-week work placement or a full year in industry. The first year of the course introduces you to the scientific principles that underpin and inform commercial livestock production, which includes a wide range of laboratory activities and experimental studies. Complementary to this is an understanding of the management techniques used in support of intensive and extensive systems of production appropriate to a range of livestock species. Detailed consideration is given in year two to the enterprise analysis skills required to understand the key factors of production and components of a successful livestock business. Student placement choices in recent years have included practising supervisory and management skills on livestock units of varying scale across the world, securing work in leading research institutes and employment with the UK’s leading agricultural consultancy organisations. The final year provides opportunity for you to explore in-depth topical issues affecting the livestock sector, including the focus module Advanced Livestock Production. This is supported by specialist high-profile speakers and industry visits. Modules throughout the course are concerned with the scientific basis of animal production systems; demonstrating how to achieve sustainable potential through improved practical and technical management to meet the requirements of consumers; the sustainable use of natural resources; the avoidance of environmental pollution, and the enhancement of animal welfare. The livestock enterprises on our farms are a great learning and teaching resource. The livestock specialism over the three years of study is supported by business, mechanisation, marketing, elective choice and other agricultural core subject modules which, together with an integrated farm business project exercise and an independent research project, provide you with a thorough insight into sustainable livestock production.
