BSc (Hons) Agriculture

Course Description

The degree in agriculture has become one of the most popular within the University and attracts students both with and without a traditional practical farming background in the industry and includes a practical graduate level 20-week work placement, or a full year in industry, either in the UK or abroad. The common core of agricultural modules is shared with all the other agricultural degree specialisms (see table). Thereafter, you have a free choice of elective modules which allows you to follow your own varied interests and initiatives. During the course, you will study the merits and challenges of different farming systems approaches. For instance, organic contrasted with traditional, and intensive compared to extensive, are examined within key crop, livestock, mechanisation and farm business management modules. In addition, you will explore the food chain - from primary production at the commercial farm level and its influence on product quality right through to the ultimate consumer. The production of safe food is now taking place in the context of such important issues as climate change, environmental protection and livestock welfare. These issues, in association with the future sustainability of UK and Global farming systems, are high on the agenda of the BSc (Hons) Agriculture degree content. The optional study tour during year three ensures that you are brought right up-to-date with as many aspects as possible of the current industry and its commercial realities.

Career outcomes

The majority of graduates follow careers in farming as owner occupiers, tenants or managers, either in the UK or overseas. Graduates have also gone on to occupations in agricultural supply industries, agricultural insurance, finance and journalism, countryside organisations, agricultural consultancy and advisory positions with government, international and private organisations. There have also been business opportunities in other commercial areas based on the business management content of the course. Some students, however, regard this degree as a stepping stone to further study for a higher degree - opportunities include progression to our postgraduate courses.
