Course Description

This American Studies degree gives you a unique opportunity to study history, literature, politics, popular culture, visual arts and sociology, within the context of the world’s most influential and controversial nation. We have made an enormous investment in American Studies, adding £600,000 worth of humanities resources to our library and recruiting six new academics to create one of the largest concentrations of US specialists outside of North America. As a result, you will be able to select from over 50 optional modules, so whether interests lie in the American Civil War or the War on Terror, Walt Whitman or Walt Disney, F. Scott Fitzgerald or Ella Fitzgerald, the American South or South Park, Martin Luther King or the Kings of Leon, Northumbria is the place for you. During your second year you can spend either one semester of the entire academic year at one of our partner institutions in North America or Canada, including universities in New York and Toronto, a life-changing experience that will greatly enhance your employment prospects. You will graduate as a self-motivated, creative and ambitious US expert, ready to hit the ground running in a vast range of careers.
