Applied Linguistics - TESOL MA

Course Description

The MA Applied Linguistics for TESOL programme is for experienced teachers of English as a second or foreign language. The programme offers a broad introduction to many of the key concepts and theories which underpin language teaching. It develops knowledge of language and language study, and also examines theories which might lie behind teaching practices. Applications are welcomed from both home and international students who have a minimum of two years full-time teaching experience. The MA Applied Linguistics for TESOL draws upon an extensive range of staff expertise and also upon the professional experience which students bring to their studies. The programme can also serve as an introduction to work at PhD level. Throughout the programme, students are encouraged to reflect upon the relationship between theory and practice in their own professional context. The programme will also help students to become aware of the personal, social, and political consequences of their work as an English language teacher in their home country. The programme aims to: * develop knowledge and understanding of the English language; theories of second language learning/acquisition; and key principles which underpin language teaching methodology. * develop students ability to appraise, evaluate and synthesize theories and concepts in terms of their relevance to specific local contexts of English teaching. * provide students with an opportunity to reflect upon and assess the social and political contexts of English language teaching within processes of globalisation. equip students with the ability to engage in continuing practice-based research and/or to pursue further formal studies in applied linguistics. * develop knowledge and understanding of research methodology and plan and undertake a Masters-level dissertation project.

There is a worldwide demand for highly qualified English Language teachers and teacher trainers, as well as for managers, course planners, government advisers, inspectors, material developers and consultants. There is also constant demand both in the UK and overseas for Applied Linguistics graduates in other language related professions, such as the media, the helping professions, communication, publishing and editing. Graduates have gone on to good careers as English teachers overseas or in their home countries. In many countries the job prospects for those holding the MA Applied Linguistics for TESOL qualification are excellent.
