Accounting BA (Hons)

Course Description

Thinking of becoming an accountant? Or looking to develop a strong background in finance and accounting as a way of gaining an edge in business? Northumbria University’s Accounting course is about more than just numbers: it’s about the art of gaining insight into financial information. It’ll provide you with excellent prospects for a rewarding career. To become a chartered accountant, you’ll need to satisfy the requirements of professional accounting bodies. Our Accounting course is designed specifically with their requirements in mind, in order to maximise the number of exemptions from their exams. Currently the course has 42 individual exemptions across six of the world’s largest professional bodies. The exemptions mean you’ll be able to enter the job market having already undertaken a significant portion of your professional qualification. Northumbria University’s Accounting course is covered by the prestigious AACSB accreditation for Newcastle Business School, which was ‘Business School of the Year’ at the Times Higher Education Awards 2015.

Career outcomes

With 42 exemptions from exams of professional bodies, BA (Hons) Accounting will minimise the number of final exams you’ll need to take after graduation in order to qualify as an accountant. In many cases only a few of the final level papers will still need to be taken. We encourage you to undertake an optional year-long placement between your second and final years. This will allow you to put your knowledge into practice and gain industry experience. Depending on the nature of the placement, it may count as the practice element that’s needed for full membership of the Association of Accounting Technicians, and you’ll be able to use the letters MAAT after your name. It’s also possible to spend the optional year in another country, studying at a university with links to Northumbria. This will extend your international experience and help prepare you for a career in the multicultural world of finance. The course includes modules that explicitly address the knowledge and skills you’ll need for personal and career development. You’ll explore your personality, values, abilities and interests as part of making a well-informed career choice and developing a career plan. In addition our Careers and Employment Service will offer a range of workshops, one-to-one advice, and networking opportunities.
